NMI lawmakers to attend APIL assembly on Guam
House Vice Speaker Timothy Villagomez will lead the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures’ general assembly on Guam this month, which will focus on enhancing cooperation to protect the environment and develop cultural tourism.
Villagomez, the president of APIL, will lead the CNMI delegation composed of several lawmakers, including Reps. Martin B. Ada and Justo S. Quitugua. APIL has slated the assembly from July 18 to 20.
APIL is a regional group composed of Pacific lawmakers from 12 governments such as the CNMI, Guam, American Samoa, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Yap, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau, Hawaii, Republic of Nauru and Republic of Kiribati. The group meets regularly to address diverse regional issues through collective efforts.
Guam Gov. Felix Camacho will address the assembly when it kicks off at the Hotel Santa Fe this Sunday.
Pacific Asia Travel Association-Micronesia Chapter chair John C. Salas, Ph.D. will provide Pacific lawmakers with an overview of the tourism markets of the region from 1990 to 2003. Salas is also associate professor of International Tourism at the University of Guam.
Guam Visitor’s Bureau general manager Alberto Lamorena will discuss ecotourism.
The assembly will also tackle regional recycling, which was also agreed upon by Pacific environmental agencies during the recent Pacific Islands Environment Conference on Saipan that was sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
