Rotary definitely starting on Monday
Teams itching to see action in the 2004 Rotary Club of Saipan Summer Youth Basketball League will have to wait a few days more for the opening of the 18-and-under cagefest.
League coordinator Elias Rangamar yesterday announced that he is pushing the start of the league until this coming Monday, July 19, to give chance for all participating teams to submit their requirements.
“Some of the teams are not yet ready. They haven’t submitted their rosters, waiver forms, proofs of age, and other requirements. That’s why we have to reschedule the kick off to this coming Monday,” he said.
Rangamar noted that teams with deficient requirements have until this Friday, July 16, to submit all their forms or risk not being allowed to play in the 2004 season of the Rotary basketball league.
Entry requirements include team rosters, players’ proof of age, completed waiver forms, and $5 membership fee. The cut-off date for players going on 19 years old is still September 30 of this year.
So far 12 teams have signed up for this year’s competition. They are led by defending champion Ol’Aces, powerhouse Garapan Rollers I as well as its sister-teams G-Rollers II and G-Rollers III, Sixers I and Sixers II, 69ers I and 69ers II, Sparks, Heat, Saints, and the women’s national team coached by Donald Blondin– which enters the league as a guest team.
Rangamar said he is inviting big wigs from the Rotary Club of Saipan to grace the opening, which start promptly at 5:30pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. All games will be played at the Oleai Sports Complex venue.

Verizon Ol’Aces won the title last Nov. 5, 2003, when the pair of Dan Barcinas and Dexter Dillay led the team in vanquishing San Antonio Sixers I, 85-81.
Verizon actually won all 14 games last year behind a solid bunch of veterans and rookies. Up-and-coming coach Lawrence Rosario mentored the team, while ex-Ol’Aces big man Ambrose Ogumoro served as his assistant coach.
