Tinian public land designated as govt center
Acting Gov. Joaquin Adriano yesterday signed into law a bill designating at least 10 hectares of public land on Tinian that will become the island’s centers of government offices.
The law also reserves village and agricultural homestead use on some 800 hectares of public land in Kastiyu and Carolinas, which would eventually be awarded to qualified homestead applicants.
“Many people on Tinian have waited too long for their village and/or agricultural homesteads and decisive action must be taken to ensure that they are afforded this fundamental right,” Adriano said.
Senate Bill 14-44 requests the Marianas Public Lands Authority to designate at least five hectares of public land at the intersection of Marpo Heights Homestead and to the southern side boundary at Broadway.
The area will house the new Department of Health Center, the Department of Public Safety, the Judicial Building, and the Department of Aging Center on Tinian.
The bill also requests the MPLA to designate at least five hectares of public land at the east side or on the hillside boundary of Carolinas Heights Homestead for the construction of the Tinian and Aguigan Municipal Capitol Hill.
The island’s Capitol Hill will house the offices of the mayor, resident department heads, municipal council, legislative delegation and the Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission and the Office of the Independent agency.
Adriano, the Senate President, introduced the bill at the upper house. He signed the bill into law as acting governor, since Gov. Juan N. Babauta is attending a summit on Guam, while Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente is in Montana for the National Lieutenant Governors’ Association conference.
