Camp KAP kicks off on Tinian
KAP, the cleverly named acronym for Kids Arts and Programs has kicked off its annual summer camp-out for children ages 6 to 17, with about 80 participants on Tinian.
Located this time at the Tinian Fiesta grounds instead of Tachogna Beach where it was held last year, the program features classes such as dance, Chamorro culture, values and beliefs, alcohol and driving, domestic violence, dating, vehicle safety, policies and laws, and drugs.
Camp KAP started Monday, July 12, and will end on Sunday, July 18, except for children ages 6 to 9 who will be leaving on Friday after holding a performance for their parents, to be based on the camp’s theme, “I Kutturata, I Linala’ta” (Our Culture Our Life).
As this is a camp, all participating children will be sleeping outdoors in tents for the duration of the program. The kids are divided into groups called ‘families’ with Matuas and Man Ma’gas for ages 6 to 9, Man Hoben, Man Brabu, and Natibus for ages 10 to 17, and the all-boys troupe Sons of Taga for ages 6 to 14. Each “family” will be transferred to the Tinian Youth Center everyday to take turns with their daily cleansing routine.
“Thanks to the Tinian Mayor’s Office for providing all the meals for the kids, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. for providing the utilities, and especially to the Tinian Youth Center and CCA for coordinating the program,” organizers of the event said. (Nathan Diaz)
