A closely contested game turned into a blow out Wednesday evening as the D-9ers rallied for 12 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Islanders in the opening game of the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball season at the Oleai Sports Complex.

Jerome Delos Santos got the ball rolling for the 9ers when he singled Paul Camacho home. Mel Sakisat followed that up by hitting a three-run blast that brought Pepi Tenorio and Delos Santos across the plate.

That was enough for Nine-time to take the lead 9-8, but Tony Camacho took it upon himself to keep up the fire when he soloed. By the time the inning was over, every player on the D-9ers had crossed the plate with the exception of Randy Sablan.

The Islanders managed to score one run in the top of the seventh but it wasn’t enough to extend the game. It was a rough night for their pitcher Jess Manibusan, as he gave up17 runs off of 17 hits, four of which went yard.

The D-9ers used a pair of arms to get them through the night. Jess Peterson and John Sablan combined to allow 9 runs off of 7 hits in seven innings of work to stymie the Islanders. As good as they were, it was the sudden burst of offense that provided for the convincing victory. Just one night after a slow pitch slugfest, Mel Sakisat went a perfect 4-for-4, hit for the cycle and tallied up 4 RBI’s to lead his team by example.

There’s plenty more slow pitch action coming your way as the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball League continues tonight at 6:30pm in Oleai, and every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday night throughout the season.
