Hectic week in sports
Almost everything from basketball, baseball, softball, bowling, fishing to motocross went down last week on Saipan.
In basketball, the alphabet soup of leagues continued to roll with the IVYBL beginning its playoffs and the UFO closing in on the end of its elimination round. The Rotary league also opened its curtains on the 2004 season, while the Inter-Restaurant Basketball League is settling on its new venue at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The CNMI Senior and Junior All-Stars also went up to Capitol Hill Tuesday morning to present Gov. Juan N. Babauta the flags of the Asia-Pacific Regional championships. Also in baseball, the Miller Lite Brewers upset pennant and defending champion Northern Yankees, 2-0, Wednesday in Game 1 of the Saipan Major League championships.
In softball, Seabridge swept both the 35-and-over and business crown with awesome performance on the diamond. Last week also saw slow pitch and fast pitch play get underway at the Oleai Sports Complex.
The past week also was memorable for Arnel Del Rosario as the 38-year-old Luen Fung employee took the title in the Miller Lite/Pepsi Rumble 7-8-9 on Sunday. The trio of Patrick Aldan, Christopher Meyers, and Francis C. Deleon Guererro, meanwhile, took the top prizes in the 9th Annual Saipan International Children’s Fishing Derby held last Sunday off the waters of Managaha Island.
The Saipan Motocross Championship also went down over the weekend at the Cowtown Raceway Park in Marpi with top riders from the CNMI, Guam, the Philippines, Japan, and Argentina seeing action.
