Alley-Oopsie Daisies claim women’s 3×3 title
Alley-Oopsie Daisies claimed the women’s title in the December championship of the NMIBF Marianas Arsenal 3×3 Basketball Series 2K23 last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Irish Pagarao, Cassandra Camacho, Kina Rangamar, and Antonette Labausa just managed to slip past Swish Kebabs’ Marlene Lumabi, Angellyn Roligat, Silvina Simram, and Kaithlyn Chavez, 16-15.
Third place went to Trail Glaziers’ Jan-Nasia Travilla, Kaia Travilla, Mikki Kautz, and Madeleine Alegre who won over Dunkin Donuts’ Lency Sagarino, Yasmeen Younis, Venice Enriquez, and Destiny Pangelinan, 18-11.
Both teams were deadlocked toward the end of the game as Alley-Oopsie Daisy blew their early lead because of Lumabi who took every opportunity at the basket.
Tied at 15-15 in the last minutes of the winner-take-all finals, Pagarao broke the tie and put them up by a point. It was Swish Kebab’s possession and Lumabi threw Hail Mary’s from outside and under the basket, but to no avail. Pagarao then got a hold of the ball and wasted time until the buzzer sounded to steal the win away.
Labausa said after the championships that the tournament was “fun.” She said, “I like how the younger girls are playing together and learning how to play with each other because they’re the future right? I think they’ve grown in their game. They’re a lot faster than us older ladies, so sometimes we have to play smart against them because they’re just faster and younger. But yeah, it was a good tournament.”
She said of their win, “It feels good. It always feels good to win.”
As for competing with the same team in the next series, she said she’s not sure. “We just joined this for fun. Thanks to Joe Villacrusis and Lia Rangamar, we have this opportunity to play with everybody.”
Alley-Oopsie Daisies sustained their first and only loss to Swish Kebabs at the beginning of the tourney last Thursday. They then alley-ooped past other competitors to get the finals and rematched Swish Kebabs for the win.
