Biden wins the NMI Democratic Primary
Ninety-nine voters across Rota, Tinian, and Saipan participated in the NMI Democratic Party’s first ever presidential primary. From March 5-12, Democrats and other supporters visited polling sites on all three islands to cast their votes.
President Joe Biden received 93 votes, Jason Palmer received four votes, and Marianne Williamson received two votes. Rep. Dean Phillips did not receive any votes in the primary.
Palmer picked up one vote on Saipan and three on Rota, while Williamson received two votes on Saipan.
Because Biden emerged victorious, he was awarded all six pledged delegates. In fact, all six delegates had already pledged for Biden. They are Nola Kileleman Hix, Shawna Evangelista Indalecio, Joan Flores Reyes, Leila Fleming Staffler, Angelo Villagomez, and Stephen Woodruff.
The 2024 Democratic National Convention will take place from Aug. 19 to 22, 2024, at the United Center, in Chicago, Illinois. The national convention will nominate the Democratic Party’s candidates for President and Vice President of the United States of America.
The NMI Democratic Party will have 11 delegates at the convention: five automatic delegates composed of party leaders and elected officials and six delegates who were elected in the primary. Members of the NMI delegation will also serve on the standing committees of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. These are the Credentials, Platform, and Rules Committees.
The Democratic Party of the Northern Marianas extends its sincerest gratitude to the four presidential candidates who vied for votes in the primary and the six delegates who put their names forward for consideration. And it thanked its community partners, vendors, and poll workers for making the primary a success. Finally, the party thanks the voters who came out and made their voices heard in the Democratic Party’s presidential primary.
