DFEMS’ quick response contains fire near Blue Hill Apartments

In a swift and coordinated effort, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services successfully contained a trash fire that had sparked and threatened the Navy Hill area yesterday.

According to a press release from DFEMS yesterday, the incident was reported by a male resident of Blue Hill Apartments at approximately 3:27pm yesterday, after which Forestry-2, Engine-2, and Medic-2 were dispatched to the scene just two minutes after the call was received.

Firefighters arrived onsite at 3:33pm and the units conducted a thorough scene size-up and reported the situation to dispatch. The fire, consisting of piles of wood and other debris, was perilously close to the apartment complex and rapidly spreading toward nearby vegetation.

According to reports, by 7:21pm, Alpha shift commander Capt. C. Laniyo reported that the main fire was under control, and crews were initiating mop-up operations.

“Our team acted quickly and efficiently to prevent the fire from causing significant damage to the apartments and surrounding areas,” Laniyo stated.

The Division of Fire Prevention and Arson Investigation promptly arrived at the scene to determine the fire’s cause. At this time, the cause remains under investigation, with findings to be released once the investigation concludes.

With 65 fires in April alone, DFEMS has responded to nearly 100 fires since the beginning of 2024.
