DOI sees how Biden administration’s agenda is aiding in Mawar recovery

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s leadership has expressed deep appreciation learning about the impact of Typhoon Mawar’s devastation in May 2023 and seeing first-hand how the Biden administration’s Investing in America agenda is aiding recovery efforts.

Shantha Ready Alonso, DOI’s Intergovernmental and External Affairs director, recently thanked Senate President Edith E. DeLeon Guerrero (D-Saipan) for the time the senator took to spend with Interior Secretary Deb Haaland during her tour of the Pacific Islands in 2023.

“We are thankful for every bit of progress we make together toward climate resilience, healthy ecosystems, and cultural preservation,” said Alonso in a letter to DeLeon Guerrero.

Alonso’s office, the Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs, serves as a liaison for governmental and non-governmental partners to strengthen relationships with the Office of the DOI Secretary. Alonso said their office is also available to facilitate requests with departmental offices and bureaus and is DeLeon Guerrero’s point of contact with the DOI for any follow-up or future requests.

Typhoon Mawar made landfall in Guam on May 24, 2023. It was the strongest to strike the island in at least two decades. Mawar also hit Rota.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland visited Saipan during her tour of the Pacific Islands in 2023.
