DPS announces occupant protection, sobriety checkpoints for Thanksgiving

The Department of Public Safety is reminding the public to prioritize safety during the busy holiday season as it announces a series of occupant protection and sobriety checkpoints set for Nov. 27 and 28, 2024.

In a media release, DPS outlined the set of checkpoints. The first checkpoint, focusing on occupant protection and child restraint compliance, will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 27, along Chalan Msgr. Guerrero from San Jose to Dandan between 8am and 10:30am.

Later that evening, two sobriety checkpoints will be in operation. The first will be on Chalan Pale Arnold from Garapan to Chalan Laulau from 6pm to 8:30pm, followed by a second checkpoint along Beach Road from Garapan to San Jose from 9pm to 11:30pm.

On Thursday, Nov. 28, sobriety checkpoints will continue with one on Beach Road from Garapan to Chalan Piao from 1pm to 3pm, and another on Chalan Pale Arnold from Chalan Laulau to Puerto Rico from 4pm to 6pm.

DPS urges all drivers to ensure their safety and the safety of others by complying with seatbelt and child restraint requirements and refraining from driving under the influence. These efforts, the department said, aim to reduce the risk of accidents and enhance road safety during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, drive responsibly, and remain vigilant as officers carry out these safety initiatives across Saipan. (Chrystal Marino)
