DPS to conduct DUI sobriety checkpoints today
The CNMI Department of Public Safety has announced plans to implement DUI (driving under the influence) sobriety checkpoints across Saipan today, Sept. 2, 2024. The initiative is part of DPS’ ongoing effort to enhance public safety and reduce the risks associated with impaired driving especially during the holiday.
The first checkpoint will be set up along Chalan Pale Arnold in Chalan Lau Lau, specifically on the southbound outer lane near Ambyth Shipping. This checkpoint will be active from 6:15pm to 7:30pm.
A second checkpoint will be established later in the evening along Chalan Monsignor Guerrero in Chalan Kiya, targeting the westbound lane near the CUC Waterloo area. This checkpoint is scheduled to operate from 8:45pm to 10pm.
Assistant chief of police and acting public information officer Simon T. Manacop emphasized that the purpose of these checkpoints to promote public safety and raise awareness about the serious dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or certain medications.
DPS urges all residents and visitors to plan accordingly, whether designating a sober driver or using alternative transportation options. The department also encourages the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or dangerous driving behavior.
DPS extends its best wishes for a safe and enjoyable celebration across the island.
