Delegate bets address gov’t accountability, small biz support

Last of a series

In a highly anticipated town hall forum, CNMI delegate candidates for U.S. House of Representatives Lian Hofschneider, Kimberlyn King-Hinds, Edwin K. Propst, James Rayphand, and John Oliver Gonzales gathered with the community to discuss pressing matters surrounding government accountability and support for small businesses. With federal funds at stake and a focus on improving local governance, the conversation centered on ensuring better oversight, transparency, and collaboration between local and federal agencies

The forum, which was hosted by Marianas Business Network at Tom Yun Restaurant & Karaoke Bar last week, opened with a discussion on the proper use of federal funds, highlighting a consensus among candidates on the need for increased legislative oversight and transparency. King-Hinds and Propst, NMI Republican Party and Democratic Party of the NMI bets, respectively, emphasized the importance of monitoring spending and proposed the creation of oversight positions to combat misuse. Hofschneider, an independent candidate, called for the Government Accountability Office file reports attached to federal funds to ensure accountability.

Regarding handling American Rescue Plan Act funds, Gonzales, another independent bet, criticized the lack of internal controls, advocating for multi-layered oversight to prevent mismanagement. In contrast, Rayphand, also an independent net, insisted that existing federal grant conditions are sufficient if properly enforced.

The delegates concluded with a focus on collaboration between local and federal agencies. King-Hinds highlighted the need for relationship-building while sharing personal anecdotes about teamwork. Rayphand reinforced the importance of community input in decision-making.

As the forum came to a close, candidates reiterated their collective commitment to public service and the support of small businesses, calling for greater community engagement and informed voting. The forum underscored critical issues of government accountability and economic development, with a clear call to action for voters to participate in shaping the island community’s future.
