Dems thrilled to participate in upcoming nat’l convention
The history of the Northern Mariana Islands Democratic Party is rooted in the former Popular Party, which led the movement in the 1960s and 1970s for self-determination and the creation of the Commonwealth in permanent political union with the United States of America.
Today, NMI Democrats are proud to be affiliated with the national Democratic Party. In 2016, NMI Democrats were represented for the first time in history at the Democratic National Convention and participated in the nomination of the first female candidate for president in United States history. In the 2020 Democratic National Convention, NMI Democrats endorsed Joe Biden for president and Kamala Harris for vice president, and joined the national party in adopting a bold and progressive platform that set forth a vision for a stronger, more just, and more equitable America.
According to vice chair Luella Marciano, “It’s been a long time coming, and we truly do appreciate the camaraderie of our sisters and brothers in Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with the 50 states across the country that have been so welcoming and resourceful.”
Next month, CNMI Democrats will gather to cast their ballots for their preferred Democratic presidential candidate and will vote for delegates to represent the party at the Democratic National Convention in August. Chicago will host the Convention from Aug. 19-22, and Democrats from across the United States and around the world will gather to formally select the party’s candidates for president and vice president of the United States of America.
Executive director Nola Hix had this to say about the upcoming National Convention: “This is the first time where state delegations will stay in a hotel within the city limits, all in downtown Chicago, so we can all connect and travel quickly from
one hotel to another. This is a huge step, and we applaud the Democratic National Convention Committee for successful logistics coordination and not to mention all the convention hotels are energized and unionized. This is a great way to show support by standing behind hardworking union employees across the country since we are the pro-union party.”
“We’ve been given our hotel arrangements, and we are excited to be sharing space with the great states of Michigan, Iowa, Kansas, and Arizona,” said party treasurer Shawna Indalecio, “and we expect the trip to be very productive as Democrats will get down to business. We can expect it to be a lot of fun with the planning committee, and local vendors hosting several events and activities for us to look forward to. I’ve also thrown my name in the hat to be a delegate, and I hope to be elected during next month’s primary.”
The delegates are individuals chosen to represent their state or territory at the convention. Democrats in the Northern Marianas will host their Presidential Primary from March 5-12 to elect eight delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention. The final day of the NMI primaries on March 12 will be held on Saipan at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe with simultaneous sub-primaries on Tinian and Rota.
Individuals interested in becoming delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention pledged to one of the presidential candidates are encouraged to visit www.nmidems.org, download the delegate candidacy form, complete the form, and email it to NMI Democratic Party chair Jonathan P.
