Diocese of Chalan Kanoa marks 40th year

Mt. Carmel Church was packed with devotees last Tuesday night for the solemn Mass of Thanksgiving in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Canonical Establishment of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa.

Eminence Pro-Prefect for the Section of Dicastery for Evangelization Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle celebrated the Mass and in his homily, he gave thanks for the 40-year blessing of the diocese.

“This is not merely a human creation, but a divine gift recognized through the efforts of many, including St. Pope John Paul II. We acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have made the life of our diocese fruitful over these past four decades, especially the late Bishop [Tomas] Camacho, his successor Archbishop Ryan Jimenez, and the current administrator, Pope Francis has appointed bishop-elect Romeo Convocar, marking a new chapter in our journey.”

Tagle reflected on the number 40 in the Bible, as the number holds a significant meaning in the biblical narratives, representing periods of trial, difficulties and temptations.

“We remember the flood where Noah and his family survived. That was rain and flood for 40 days and 40 nights. Then, Moses spent 40 days and 40 nights on Mount Sinai to commune with God. We remember the people of Israel who wandered in the desert for 40 years before entering the promised land. Jesus, the new Moses, and the head of the new Israel after his baptism, spent 40 days, 40 nights in the desert where he was tempted, but where also he affirmed his mission. Then after his resurrection, the risen Lord spent 40 days with his disciples, preparing them for the coming of the spirit and also for their mission. And, the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa is completing 40 years,” said Tagle.

Moreover, he mentioned that we are called to remember our journey, drawing lessons from the Israelites’ experience in the desert. Although they faced hunger and thirst, they often forgot God’s providence and instead longed for the comforts of Egypt. God’s response was to provide manna, teaching them that life is about more than physical sustenance; it’s about His word and commandments.

Tagle also reminded the community, not to cling to the past but remain open to the new blessings and experiences God offers us.

“We should reflect on how we sometimes resist change and prefer what we know, like past parish priests or familiar church practices, rather than embracing new leaders and perspectives.”

The cardinal shared from the Gospel—Peter returning to fishing after Jesus’ resurrection, only to catch nothing until Jesus directs him to cast his net on the other side of the boat. This event reminds us that we may not always find success using our own methods and that we must be open to God’s guidance, even when it comes through unexpected channels.

He said that we should also remember the humility of acknowledging that our efforts may not always yield immediate results and that we should seek to align our plans with God’s will rather than solely relying on our expertise.

Tagle ended his homily by highlighting that remembering is not just for us but for those who come after us, sharing the stories of Jesus’ love and guidance.

The outgoing Diocese of Chalan Kanoa administrator, Fr. Charlie Borja, delivered his acknowledgment remarks after the Mass.

Borja expressed his gratitude for the successful 40th anniversary celebration and acknowledged the hard work and contributions of everyone involved.

“To all our sponsors and benefactors thank you so much. We cannot possibly have a beautiful and successful 40th anniversary celebration without your kindness and generous hearts… To our parishioners and to our younger people, thank you for your eagerness to share the gift of gathering. All our events are well attended, and I hope that our gathering was more than to see Archbishop Ryan and Cardinal Chito,” said Borja.

He also thanked the people for their prayers and support for the past more than three months and even joked by thanking God that he didn’t spend 40 years as apostolic administrator.

Borja confirmed that the ordination of the new bishop will take place on March 8, 2025, at 9am in the morning and the preparation for the event will begin immediately.
