GCC celebrates bus driving bootcampers
Guam Community College celebrated 12 individuals for successfully completing the Bus Driving III Bootcamp on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. All completers are now gainfully employed by this bootcamps employer sponsors.
“The partnership that we have, not just with government agencies, but with each and every one of these students is vital for us to continue eco-development here [in] Guam,” said Dr. Mary A. Y. Okada, GCC president. “With GCC being the leader of career and technical education helps to support that [development] by providing the services and the training for individuals to advance. If you are already or currently employed, hopefully you get that next promotion by getting this certification you just recently received, or if you are not employed, we hope that we have been able to help you open up that opportunity for you.”
The completers earned their Class “D” Licenses for bus driving (hands-on instruction) along with certifications in Passenger Assistance, Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED, Work Ethic, OSHA 10, and WorkKeys. In addition to completing the bootcamp, participants hired by the Government of Guam completed one year of on-site work experience to fulfill job eligibility requirements.
Guam Department of Labor deputy director Gerard Toves shared his appreciation of GCC’s bootcamps at the ceremony on Wednesday. “Thank you for being a huge part of our community in receiving these certifications,” said Toves. “These folks right here…whatever life threw at them they still kept on coming. From the bottom of my teams’ hearts, thank you so much for completing. You are now a total asset with our community. Please share with others about the bootcamps that GCC has coming up,” he added.
The Bootcamp employer sponsors were the Guam Department of Public Works, Guam Regional Transit Authority, and Kloppenburg Enterprises, Inc. GCC also recognizes the Guam Department of Labor and the Dededo Mayor’s Office for their continued support of GCC Bootcamps such as Bus Driving. (PR)
