Good Friday trek today
Hundreds of devout Catholics, as well as health enthusiasts, gathered early morning today at the bottom of Mt. Tapochau for the annual trek up the mountain in honor of Good Friday.
As per tradition, the walk up the mountain is to represent the walk of Christ up Golgotha before His crucifixion on Good Friday, and many devout Catholic believers attempt the trek as a way of remembering the final moments of Christ before His earthly death.
Catholic parishes on island take turns in providing the giant wooden cross that will be carried by church devotees up the hill to be planted at the peak of Mt. Tapochau. This year the parish providing the cross is the Santa Soledad Parish in Kagman under Fr. Charlie Borja.
According to schedule, the cross will be brought to the Chalan Kanoa Diosease at around 4:30am where it will be blessed and then transported to the base of Mt. Tapochau at around 5:30pm, where the trek will begin shortly thereafter. Several chosen men usually carry the cross while the rest of the participants follow closely behind.
There are also expected to be dozens of rest stop stations lining the route from both government and private sectors providing water and medical assistance should it be needed.
