High winds, rough seas expected as TD Kong-Rey passes near Marianas

Residents across the Northern Marianas are being advised to brace for strong winds, heavy rains, and dangerous coastal conditions as Tropical Depression Kong-Rey (23W) moves northwest of the region. The National Weather Service in Guam has issued a series of warnings and advisories for the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, effective through the weekend.

A High Wind Warning is in effect for Saipan and Tinian until midnight tonight, with southeast winds reaching speeds of 25 mph to 35 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. After midnight, this warning will be downgraded to a Wind Advisory that will remain in place until 6pm Saturday. “Damaging gusts will blow down tarps and canopies,” the advisory warns, urging residents to secure outdoor objects and exercise caution, especially while driving.

The Emergency Operations Center on Saipan is monitoring the situation. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios has also advised residents to be cautious as winds this strong can make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, urging everyone to stay safe. He also advised that mariners especially ones operating smaller vessels to avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.

In addition to the wind warnings, a High Surf Advisory and a High Risk of Rip Currents have been issued for north- and east-facing reefs. The strong winds and dangerous seas are expected to persist until at least Saturday afternoon, particularly along Saipan and Tinian’s coasts.

The waters surrounding Rota are also under a Small Craft Advisory until Sunday evening. Mariners have been cautioned to avoid navigating in hazardous conditions, with seas ranging from 8 to 13 feet and gusty winds up to 35 knots. Gale-force winds of 25-35 knots, with gusts up to 50 knots, are expected through tonight for the coastal waters of Saipan and Tinian. “Smaller vessels are at higher risk,” stated the advisory, which could result in reduced visibility and potentially dangerous navigation.

Locally, Saipan and Tinian will experience widespread heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds are forecast to peak at 35 mph this afternoon, with gusts up to 45 mph, before gradually easing on Saturday. The islands will remain cloudy and breezy throughout the weekend, with scattered thunderstorms and occasional downpours expected through Monday.

Tropical Depression Kong-Rey, located just west of Rota, is responsible for these heightened weather conditions. As the depression moves further away from the Marianas, conditions are expected to improve, though the advisory stresses the importance of remaining vigilant.
