Hyun tops CWGA October tourney

Son “Sunny” Hyun posted her first win in the CNMI Women’s Golf Association this season during the October CWGA Tournament held last Oct. 12 at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talafofo.

The 55-year-old Boss Karaoke owner shot a net score of 77 following a 42 in the front nine and a 43 in the back nine for a gross of 85.

“The course was a little difficult because the grass was long and it was hard to find the ball when it went into the rough. The weather was nice and clear. My best hole was No. 8 because I almost made a hole-in-one. I made a birdie there,” she said.

Janet Torres came second with a net score of 78 build around a gross of 92 and a front and back nine of twin 46s. Completing the Top 3 was CWGA president Yuko Togawa after she carded a net 84 on the strength of her 89 gross (42-47). Sherlyn Jones actually finished tied with Togawa with her identical net score of 84 (94, 45-49), but lost via scorecard tiebreak.

A total of nine CWGA members took part in the October tourney. The rest of the field, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Clara Chang (87), Flor Jones (88), Rose Rohringer (92), Lorraine Babauta (93), and Doll Yamagishi (95).

Last month, Chang topped the September CWGA Tournament after firing a net score 76 following a front and back nine of 48-47 for a gross score of 95.

She said after many days of rain, the skies cleared up and allowed CWGA to play their monthly competition, but it was a rough day on the golf course nonetheless.

“The golf course was very tough and the air was heavy, making for a tough round.”
