Joe Sablan Jr. tops Super Senior flight; Hyun Son rules Ladies

The veteran Super Senior Flight was topped by Joe Sablan Jr., while the Ladies Flight was won by Hyun Son in the 2024 Joeten Memorial Classic at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort east course last Saturday.

Sablan had the lowest gross score of 76. In the front nine, he fired a birdie in holes No. 6 and No. 8 for a gross of 38, and in the back nine, he shot a birdie in the first hole No. 10 for another gross score of 38.

A close second place was Joe’s cousin, Richard Sablan—who he went head-to-head with throughout the tourney. Richard settled behind Joe by just one shot with a gross score of 77, while third place was Edward Manibusan Sr. just a tick above with a gross score of 78.

Joe said that this is his first win in this flight and that he’s “very happy because a lot of super seniors [are] great golfers too.”

He then thanked the Joeten family “for putting up a great tournament and helping golfers in providing drinks and food to keep us energized on a very hot day. Thanks to all the participants for coming out and helping out a good cause.”

In the Ladies Flight, Hyun Son ruled the division with the lowest gross score of 73. Second was Young Min Choi with her 79, and third went to Young Hee Yoo with a gross of 81.

In the Senior Flight, Anthony Benavente was tops with a gross score of 72. Second was Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho who finished with his gross total of 74; and after a scorecard playoff, Jim Arenovski took third place over Joe Tudela who both had a gross of 85.

For the other flights, Keith Kintol topped the B Flight with his gross score of 83. The second, third, and fourth place were all tied with a gross score of 85, with Jose Santos coming out in second place after a scorecard playoff. Third place went to Antonio Norita who beat out Calvin Yamagishi.

And in the C Flight, it was won by James Lin with a gross score of 81.

Just a shot behind in second place was Isaac Aguon with a gross score of 82, and third place went to Sixtus Aquino who fired a gross score of 84.

In all, 144 golfers participated in the tourney that’s featured every five years.

Every milestone year, the Joeten DaiDai Foundation hosts the JMGC to help support various causes and non-profit organizations within the CNMI. This year, the JMGC was held on the 75th anniversary of Joeten and the late Jose Camacho Tenorio’s 101st birthday.
