Man-Yi moves away from Saipan, Tinian; threat remains for Guam, Rota
Tropical Storm Man-Yi, which has been intensifying over recent days, has begun to move southwest, steering away from the Northern Marianas. At 9am today, the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management confirmed that the tropical storm warning for Saipan and Tinian has been canceled. However, warnings remain in place for Guam and Rota, where tropical storm conditions persist.
As of the latest update from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, Man-Yi’s center was positioned approximately 50 miles southwest of Guam and 105 miles south-southwest of Rota. The storm currently packs maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving southwest at 18 mph. Forecasts indicate it will veer westward and may further intensify, potentially reaching typhoon status as it approaches Yap.
For the residents of Rota, Tropical Storm Condition I remains in effect, signaling imminent or ongoing damaging winds between 39 and 74 mph. CNMI HSEM cautions Rota residents to stay vigilant, as gusts could escalate while the storm passes. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios has assured the community that monitoring and support operations will remain in full force, with bulletins issued as new information arises.
While Saipan and Tinian are no longer under tropical storm conditions, officials warn that strong gusts of 35-45 mph may still occur, particularly in the morning hours, before gradually tapering off by midday. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions against these unpredictable conditions.
The CNMI Emergency Operations Center encourages the community to remain engaged with local media for the latest weather updates. Further information is also accessible through NOAA weather broadcasts, the ReadyCNMI app, and CNMI EOC State Warning Point hotlines.
An intermediate bulletin is scheduled for 11am, with the next comprehensive update anticipated at 2pm.
