Man dies day after hitting flame tree

A 42-year-old man died a day after he blacked out and struck a flame tree with his car last Sunday in Lower Dan Dan, according to the Department of Public Safety.

During a press conference at DPS headquarters in Susupe yesterday, DPS Commissioner Anthony Macaranas shared that Stanford Abraham was involved in the aforementioned car accident at around 5:16pm last Sunday on Tun Herman Pan Road, near the intersection of Flame Tree Road.

Responding officers found Abraham black sedan crashed into a flame tree, sustaining extensive front-end damage. Abraham was conscious and responsive at the scene, but complained of back pain.

He was immediately rushed to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. for treatment. Abraham was the only person in the car.

“The operator at the time was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol and speed were not a factor, but unfortunately because of the medical emergency that incurred, the vehicle ran off the road and struck a flame tree. The operator was identified as a 42-year-old, last name’s Abraham, first name’s Stanford. He’s a resident of San Vicente,” Macaranas added.

DPS shared that preliminary investigation revealed that due to underlying health conditions, Abraham blacked out while driving southbound. Upon regaining consciousness, he found himself in the wreckage. When officers found him, he disclosed to authorities that he suffers from a medical condition that causes seizures and loss of consciousness.

Sadly, on Monday, Sept. 9, DPS was informed that Abraham succumbed to his injuries, passing away at 10am due to intra-abdominal bleeding. Investigators ruled out other potential contributing factors such as speed, alcohol, drugs, or traffic infractions.

“Currently right now Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash as to other factors of the crash,” said Macaranas. “But as of right now we’re classifying this as a non-traffic crash because of the nature of the operator that has succumbed to injuries that might be related to his medical condition.”

As no criminal charges are expected, an autopsy will not be conducted, but Macaranas said that the case will remain under investigation.
