Mother’s Day is everyday year round
Here are two secular prayers for mothers. Both were published last year on May 16th and May 23rd respectively in the Saipan Tribune. Both revised.
OUR MOTHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN
Our mother who is up in heaven above
honored be thy name and family with you
your children here on earth send all their love
thank you for all your work, giving birth too.
Give us this day your mother’s delicious old recipes
for scalloped potatoes and Boston baked beans
cottage pudding cake, ham and black-eyed peas
and homemade cocoa we drank through our teens
Forgive me mother for not helping you more
and spending my allowance at the candy store
so I avoided the smallest household chore
complaining that washing the dishes was a bore
I hope to see you in heaven if I ever get there
Until then my dear Mother know that I care.
MOTHERLY LOVE: A GOOGOLPLEX LITANY
Billions of galaxies in the universe we know
Billions of stars in those galaxies galore
Billions of planets where things might grow
Billions of grains of sand on their shore
Millions of birds fly around the world
Millions of worms, bugs, flying insects
Millions of flowers with petals unfurled
Millions of creatures reproduce by sex
Billions of mothers living here on Earth
Billions of mothers give all they can give
Millions of mothers annually give birth
Millions of mothers die so that we can live
Mothers teach us all with love and mirth
Pouring out their hearts for all its worth.
