NWS: growing speculation of possible tropical cyclone

The National Weather Service based off Tiyan, Guam says that they continue to monitor growing speculations of a possible tropical cyclone in the Marianas expected sometime next week.

According to a regional report from NWS, locally, there is growing speculation about the possibility of a tropical cyclone developing within the Federated States of Micronesia and moving toward the Marianas sometime early to mid-next week.

This remains one of several forecast scenarios for the region through next week, NWS said adding that they will continue to keep an eye out.

“We are aware of scenarios being circulated on social media via a number of weather apps. However, these scenarios are still in the longer range and subject to significant change. We are watching model forecast trends closely as well as monitoring all available observed weather conditions. Stay tuned to weather forecasts from the NWS in the coming days as conditions evolve. For now, there are no suspect tropical disturbances in the region, however, we will keep a close eye on conditions within the trough northwest of the Marianas (anything here will not be a threat to the region), and in the FSM, for any suspect areas for development,” said NWS.

NWS further states that the weekly regional weather outlook will be updated later this week, if conditions warrant, in support of early, proactive communication and preparedness.

Meanwhile, a tropical disturbance, Invest 93W, sits well north of the Marianas and poses no threat to the region.

Elsewhere, a number of forecast models indicate the development of a tropical disturbance later this week, near or south of Kosrae and Pohnpei then developing further as it makes a pass near or through the region between Yap and the northern Marianas sometime next week.

Because of this. tropical weather activity is possible through next week, but not necessarily guaranteed.

Aside from that, for the rest of this week, NWS says the region remains free of significant weather at this time.

Last week, a tropical disturbance near Palau developed to become Tropical Storm Yagi (12W) which is currently moving away from the northern Philippines to the west.
