New Shinsen Sushi moves upstream to Middle Road

Shinsen Sushi Restaurant may have relocated to Middle Road in Garapan and added “New” to its name, but the Japanese restaurant continues to be the go-to place for locals pining for the bite-size savory Japanese delights.

Manager Jung Gon “Kris” Kim said they made the move from the heart of Garapan to Middle Road last April 25 after the building where their old haunt was located was sold to a new owner.

“In our old location the building was sold and the new buyer wanted to renovate it to a hotel,” he said.

The move and three-month long renovation and waiting time for permits to be approved was well worth it, according to Kim, as they’ve been enjoying brisk sales since transferring to Middle Road.

“Better than before when it comes to customers as we’ve been very busy since opening in April. Before we only had a small parking lot, but now we have a lot of parking space. Lunch is very busy specially during weekdays and Friday and Saturday as we get a lot of families.”

In a way, the transfer from near hotel street and Paseo de Marianas has been a blessing in disguise for New Shinsen Sushi, according to Kim.

“Garapan was already congested because of the ongoing construction (Garapan Revitalization Project). We picked this place because it’s along the main highway—Middle Road—and has ample parking because all three buildings along this area are owned by the same owner so customers can park anywhere,” he said.

New Shinsen Sushi can also call their new digs part of restaurant row as Island Café and Savory Bistro are just around the corner, while All-Star Restaurant is across Middle Road and this has translated to heavier dine-in traffic.

The move to Middle Road came with slightly higher menu prices though, as Kim admitted he had no choice due to a rise in the prices of ingredients and shipping cost.

As for bestsellers, spicy salmon and spicy tuna continue to be the favorites as well as the tempura roll and crunchy roll.

New Shinsen Sushi is located along Middle Road across Mobil gas station in Garapan and is open from Monday to Saturday, 11:30am-1:30pm and 5:30pm-9:30pm. It can seat 52 customers at its main dining area, while 30 can be accommodated inside their three private rooms.
