Ogo seeks to bolster local bottling industry and combat plastic waste
Rep. Julie Ogo (Ind-Rota) unveiled yesterday her comprehensive legislative proposal to strengthen the local bottling industry while addressing the pressing issue of plastic waste in our communities.
The proposed bill, the “Foreign Bottled Water Excise Tax and Recycling Incentive Program Act of 2024,” seeks to increase excise taxes on foreign bottled products while incentivizing local bottling companies to expand their operations and establish robust recycling programs.
Under the provisions of the proposed legislation, excise taxes on foreign bottled products would be raised, leveling the playing field for domestic bottlers and providing them with a competitive edge in the market.
Ogo emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses and creating opportunities for growth within the bottling industry.
In addition to boosting the competitiveness of local bottlers, the bill includes provisions to encourage these companies to take greater responsibility for their environmental impact.
Ogo stressed the need for corporate accountability, saying, “Companies should be more responsible when it comes to recycling their waste in the community.”
One of the key components of the legislation is the establishment of incentives for local bottling companies to develop and implement recycling programs to minimize plastic waste. By empowering these companies to take proactive measures to address environmental concerns, the bill aims to promote sustainability and reduce the environmental footprint of the bottling industry.
Ogo is confident that the proposed legislation would not only benefit local businesses but also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations. She urged her colleagues to support the bill and emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in addressing critical issues such as plastic waste management and economic development.
As the legislative process moves forward, Ogo remains committed to working with stakeholders from across the political spectrum to ensure the passage of this vital piece of legislation. (PR)
