Ol’Aces, Pegs beat foes in Mich Cup

Ol’Aces pummeled 670 Akkari Ruuw 2, 76-47, in the 2024 Michelob Ultra Cup (men’s open division) last Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

It was a dominant start to the game for Ol’Aces as their lead grew with each shot. Contributions from their starting five allowed them to have a 10-point lead heading into the second quarter—without help from the free throw or 3-point line.

However, 670 Akkari Ruuw 2 had a spark of life in the second quarter as they bodied their way through the paint and elicited multiple fouls. In a turn of events, it was a low-scoring quarter for Ol’Aces as only 8 points were made by Elias Rangamar, Melvin Sakisat Jr., and Jawn Joyner.

At the half, the tables have turned in favor of 670 Akkari Ruuw 2, as they now had a 1-point, 31-30 lead—thanks to the Ron Laxamana and Jay Art Palmes’ contributions from the charity line.

It was all or nothing in the second half and that was when Ol’Aces put their game into overdrive—and it paid off. They learned from their mistakes in the second quarter and tightened their defense.

As a result, Ol’Aces’ offense exploded, and led by Sakisat, they came out of the third with a huge 16-point lead. From there, 670 Akkari Ruuw 2, fatigued and running on fumes, converted only 9 more points while Ol’Aces blew the game wide open even before the five-minute mark.

Sakisat collected the most points with 18, while Mathew Lukas and Harry Kapwich put up 10 each. For 670 Akkari Ruuw 2, Palmes led the team with 24, while J.C. Ong had 12 markers, and Laxamana scored 8.

For Pegs, they routed Lakay, 88-70, last Tuesday.
