Palacios attends Micronesian Islands Forum in Guam

Gov. Arnold I Palacios attended the 26th Micronesian Islands Forum which began yesterday in Guam.

Last Friday, May 31, Palacios issued a memorandum to all department and agency heads stating that Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang will be assuming authority while he is off-island this week.

“This is to inform you that I will be out of the Commonwealth from June 02, 2024 to June 07, 2024 on official business. Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang will be acting governor, pursuant to Article III, Section 8 (a) of the Commonwealth Constitution until my return. I advise all departments and agencies to ensure all actions, documents and correspondences during this time reflect this assumption of authority. Please extend your full cooperation and assistance to the Lt. Gov. Apatang as he assumes this additional responsibility,” said the memorandum.

Saipan Tribune learned that Palacios will be attending the 26th Micronesian Islands Forum from June 3 to 4 hosted by Guam.

The Micronesian Islands Forum was established in 1994. It comprises of island nations and territories in Micronesia including the CNMI, Guam, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands.

The Micronesian Islands Forum’s main goal is to encourage cooperation and collaboration on common issues such as sustainable development, climate change, ocean conservation, economic development, cultural preservation, and regional security.

It also provides a platform for members to interact with other regional and international organizations.

The forum also encourages cooperation and collaboration on health, environment, and other important issues the Micronesia region faces.

The forum’s theme this year is “Writing Our History, Shaping Our Future.”

Palacios’ trip comes less than a week since his return from his last trip from Japan where he, along with the Marianas Visitors Authority, hosted the Marianas Seminar.

MVA organized the seminar in Tokyo to provide details about Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, with the goal of generating new Marianas products and new media coverage to attract more Japanese travelers to the destination.
