Palacios sends expression of support, offers assistance to Taiwan

Gov. Arnold I. Palacios has expressed support and offered assistance to Taiwan in its time of need in the wake of a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the eastern side of Taiwan.

Palacios sent a letter on Thursday to Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen, stating that in this spirit of international cooperation and friendship, the CNMI wishes to be part of the concerted effort to support Taiwan.

“Please know that our community is ready to assist in any way possible to support the recovery and rebuilding efforts,” the governor said.

Palacios said the CNMI stands ready in solidarity with Taiwan during this challenging time.

He said it is with a heavy heart that they received news of the devastating earthquake that struck the eastern side of Taiwan on Wednesday.

The governor said the CNMI extends its deepest sympathies to all those affected by this tragic event, which has caused loss of lives, injuries to hundreds, and significant disruption to daily life in and around Hualien.

He said the images and reports emerging from the affected areas are deeply saddening.

Palacios said it is particularly distressing to learn of the casualties, the injured, and those trapped due to the collapse of structures and damage to infrastructure.

“Our thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones, those who are injured, and the brave individuals participating in rescue operations,” he said.

He said the CNMI is moved by the resilience and strength shown by the people and the government of Taiwan in responding to this disaster.

The government said the CNMI acknowledges and appreciates the global community’s response, including expressions of support and offers of assistance from various countries.

Palacios asked the Taiwan president not to hesitate to inform him how the CNMI can be of assistance.

“Our prayers and thoughts remain with you, and we hope for a swift and robust recovery for all affected by this disaster,” Palacios told the president.
