Phase 1 of Tinian Divert Airfield project to be completed next year

The first phase of the Tinian Divert Airfield is now expected to completed by Oct. 16, 2025.

Back in February 2022, the Commonwealth Ports Authority, Commonwealth Bureau of Military Affairs, Department of Defense, and Tinian Municipality broke ground on the first phase of the construction of the Tinian Divert Airfield.

The Tinian Divert Airfield—to which is being constructed largely on the north side of the Tinian airport—will allow the U.S. Air Force to use Tinian as an alternative landing site for its planes—a divert airfield—in case Anderson Air Force Base in Guam is inaccessible due to war or calamities.

During the groundbreaking ceremony back in 2022, the expected completion date of the over $161.8-million project was Oct. 9, 2025.

However, according to CBMA special assistant Danny Aquino, the first phase of the project will be completed on Oct. 16, 2025

The first phase of the divert airfield facility entails the completion of a parking apron for miliary planes and overall airfield development.

As for phase II, Aquino said the expected completion date is Oct. 11, 2026.

The second phase entails the construction of a cargo pad with a taxiway extension, a maintenance support facility, fuel tanks with receipt pipeline and hydrant systems, and roads.

The contract for the first phase of the Tinian Divert Airfield was awarded to Black Micro Corp. back in Nov. 30, 2021.

The contract amount for phase II of the Tinian Divert Airfield porject is about $221.7 million and was awarded to Black Micro last April 19, 2023.
