Pirates lay waste to Spartans, 16-3

The undefeated Pirates are still the league-leading team with five wins after they defeated the Spartans, 16-3, in the 2023 Tan Holdings-SBL Master’s League last Wednesday at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field.

It was a run mercy-ruled game as the floodgates opened for the Pirates in the fifth inning. The Spartans’ pitching staff could not put a leash on the Pirates’ offense as they scored 12 consecutive runs in that inning alone.

It started with a base on balls to Pete Sablan, who was then brought in by Pete Tomokane. Audie Maratita then hit an RBI-double, who in turn came home on another RBI double by Eric Palacios.

From there, back-to-back-to-back RBI singles were made all the way from the bottom of the line-up and to the top again.

The Pirates had previously just scored one run in the first inning, two in the third, and one in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. The Spartans thought they could catch up after they scored two runs by the fourth inning, but their pitching staff could not handle the Pirates’ offensive heat.

In the end, Pirates’ Maratita had four RBIs, two hits out of three at-bats, two runs, and two doubles, while Rudy Guerrero claimed two RBIs, one hit, and one run.

Pirates’ Mark Toves is in the batters’ box during their 2023 Tan Holdings-SBL Masters League game against the Spartans last Wednesday at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field.
