Prime teams notch wins in women’s league

Prime 1 and Prime 2 were on their A-game and showed it off with a win over their foes in the 2024 Women’s Basketball League at the Gillette Multi-Purpose Gymnasium in Gualo Rai last Sunday.

Prime 1 were in top-tier shape against the Katinko Kweens and beat them, 44-28. Full names for both teams were not provided by organizers.

The young players of Prime 1 held down the veteran ballers of Katinko Kweens with their speed and accuracy. Prime 1’s ball handling was managed well and four back-to-back takes from deep 3-point territory by Venice, Mya, Kalia, and another by Venice allowed them to control and widen their lead.

Meanwhile, Maddy of the Kweens attempted to rally her team with a consecutive 10-point shooting spree, but they could only get within 5 points at the end of the first half, 21-16.

The second half only saw Prime 1 become stronger as their hunt for threes didn’t stop. They opened it up with a three by Mya as Katinko Kweens struggled with keeping possession and accurate attempts. Venice was a menace from downtown and went on to score two more from there and added in a couple of field goals for 19 points.

The Katinko Kweens were eventually out for the count as Lia delivered the 1-2 knockout punch with two consecutive buckets towards the end of the game for the final 16-point win margin.

As for Prime 2’s game against the Bwii Ballers, they escaped with a 43-37 final. Bwii Ballers’ names were not given, only their jersey numbers.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first half as they traded possession and the lead teetered between them throughout. But Bwii Ballers paid their dues and lived in 3-point territory. Six consecutive three-pointers were shared between Vina, Anissa, and Angel.

However, Prime 2 kept pace and scored from deep as well and held on to a mere 3-point lead at the end of the first half, 22-18.

Despite Bwii Ballers’ big time takes from the deep, Prime 2’s consistency and accuracy proved to be the winning factor and pulled away when it mattered most. They kept up with their game plan as they had little margin for error with the Bwii Ballers creeping up from behind, and Prime 2 managed to stick the landing and win by 6 points, 43-37.

In the other game that day, Her-icanes defeated Alley-Oops, 34-18.

The friendly league is a mix of NMI Women’s National Basketball Team players and beginners. The rules are simple: national players cannot guard new players, and fastbreak plays and full court presses are not allowed.
