‘RB’ relaunches Neighborhood Watch Program

Following a recent spike in criminal activities including the theft of vehicle tires and gas, Saipan Mayor Ramon “RB” B. Camacho is gradually working to re-launch his pet Neighborhood Watch Program and is calling upon community members to become an active part of this initiative when it launches.

“If you see something, say something,” said Camacho.

Camacho first launched the program when he was still chairman of the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council.

The principal goal of the program is to implement a year-round community-based “Neighborhood Watch” effort by all to preserve the safety and security of all—children (famagu’on), youth (manhoben), adults and elderly (man’amko), families, households, businesses, non-profit organizations, and public facilities—in villages throughout Saipan.

Saipan Tribune reported last Sept. 3 two separate theft incidents that involved heavy equipment truck batteries and truck tires at the WIC Administrative Office in Upper Navy Hill and CTSI storage facilities.

Last Aug. 28, Saipan Tribune reported a spike in gas theft incidents wherein the Department of Public Safety issued a public warning across Saipan as thieves were primarily targeting 15-seater passenger vans. DPS also confirmed that within the week of Aug. 18-24, they received eight complaints involving the theft of fuel from multiple vehicles, raising concerns among the local community and businesses.

Camacho added that any information or tips regarding these crimes will ultimately help law enforcement in protecting the community.

“Our island is a diverse community and I’m calling upon all of our ethnic groups to stand and work together to combat this unacceptable behavior,” he added.
