Register for the 2nd Veterans Day 5K
Honor and thank our veterans while you keep fit in Run Saipan’s 2nd Annual Veteran’s Day 5K on Monday, Nov. 11.
The start time is 6am at the start/finish line at the former Hyatt Regency in Garapan. The turnaround is at the Pacific Trading Co. in Puerto Rico.
Run Saipan will not only award the Top 3 men and women, but will also award two more categories for male and female: Veterans Category and the Armed Forces Category.
The Armed Forces Category is for those still in active duty with the National Guard and the Reserve components.
For Run Saipan president Edward Dela Cruz Jr., who is a veteran after serving three years in the Guam Army National 1st -294th Infantry Regiment, this race is in honor of the veterans on the island.
“There’s not many veterans activities on the island when it comes to running so I wanted to hold this event in honor of them. Veterans Day is the day we pay respect to those who have served and given their all for our great nation,” he said.
He added, “Run Saipan would like to hold a 5K in honor of our veterans for their dedication and service. As such, we have a special rate for them and also we have categories for the runs this year for honoring the fastest of them all.”
This year, he said, he said he decided to use the official Saipan Marathon 5K course at the Memorial Park instead of at Airport Road, where it was held last year.
“The reason behind this was that the veterans ceremony was held at the park. Last year we didn’t get a big turnout because of how far the location was to the veterans ceremony. I wanted to ensure that our armed forces guests and veterans who flew in for the ceremony would be close to their hotel room to prepare for the ceremony and run this event. Also, Garapan is more central than the airport,” he said. “I hope we have a couple of admirals or generals run this 5K this year with our guys.”
