SBDC helps women gain entrepreneurial skills

‘There is still a lot more that needs to be done for women entrepreneurs locally, but the CNMI is not far behind in providing opportunities for women-led businesses to thrive.’

Women continue to break glass ceilings in entrepreneurship, either by becoming a part of a corporate team once dominated by male executives or by choosing to become business owners themselves.

In Lisa Zhou’s blog list of 2024 trends about women in business, women-owned businesses have grown 114% in the last two decades while one-third of businesses worldwide are owned by women. On a global scale, one in three businesses has a woman among the principal owners.

There is still a lot more that needs to be done for women entrepreneurs locally, but the CNMI is not far behind in providing opportunities for women-led businesses to thrive.

At the CNMI Small Business Development Center Network, aspiring women entrepreneurs may take advantage of the no-cost consulting and training workshops that are part of the Women Entrepreneurship Program.

All it takes to be included in the Women Entrepreneurship Program is simply registering to become a CNMI SBDC client, according to Nadine C. Deleon Guerrero, network director of the CNMI SBDC Network.

Since being introduced four years ago, three groups of women have already completed WEP’s training and lectures.

Held in collaboration with the CNMI Women’s Association, the training series involves industry experts, mentors, and women entrepreneurs sharing and providing their expertise on a wide range of topics that include business planning, financial management, and marketing.

The training also focuses on personal development and leadership skills, helping participants gain the confidence and tools needed to succeed in the business world.

Deleon Guerrero acknowledges the importance of building and sustaining good business connections and relationships among women as vital to their success as entrepreneurs.

“It is important that we continue to acknowledge the vital role women play in business. Through WEP, we strive to provide that safe space where women can engage with one another, share business tips and tricks, and where the ultimate goal becomes lifting each other and empowering them toward making smarter and healthier financial decisions that will catapult them toward success.”

Deleon Guerrero said the success of the third group of WEP graduates is a testament to the strength, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit of CNMI women.

She said the program’s impact is expected to be felt throughout the region with the women graduates contributing to the CNMI’s economic growth and prosperity.

Donna Rivera, one of the program’s participants, said she will put to good use the information and skills she learned from the four-day program. “Being surrounded by women eager to learn and support one another in achieving success with our ventures was truly a treat. I wish everyone success and sincerely hope that Northern Marianas College, CNMI SBDC, and CNMI Women’s Association will continue this project for the greater good of our entire community.”

Linda Cabrera, a representative from the CNMI Women’s Association, added, “…This initiative promotes gender equality and economic development in our community. The collaboration between the CNMI Small Business Development Center Network and the CNMI Women’s Association has been instrumental in making this program a success, and we look forward to continuing to support the growth of women-owned businesses.”

Deleon Guerrero said the SBDC is committed to remain an active supporter of initiatives that promote equitable opportunities in the business community for women.

“By championing gender equality, the SBDC contributes to local and global competitiveness, positioning our community as one that values diversity and fosters economic prosperity,” said Deleon Guerrero.

For women who want to enter the world of entrepreneurship, she shares this gem: “Embrace your dreams and aspirations with unwavering confidence as you embark on the path of entrepreneurship. Your resilience, creativity, and determination are the cornerstones of a thriving business community. Support one another, celebrate each success, and lift each other up in times of challenge. Your endeavors contribute not only to your personal success but also to the growth and dynamism of our entire community. Believe in the power of your ideas and let your entrepreneurial spirit shine. Together, we can create a future where women entrepreneurs in the CNMI are not just prominent but trailblazers inspiring generations to come.”
