SCS celebrates 36 years of Concert Band excellence

Saipan Community School kicked off its 36th year of Concert Band for students in 4th-8th grade. The SCS opening concert was held last Oct. 19 at the school’s chapel. The event drew a large crowd of enthusiastic parents, teachers, and community members who were eager to witness the musical journey of SCS’ young musicians.

The concert opened with a powerful rendition of “Regal March” by Bruce Pearson, arranged by Chuck Elledge, performed by the Beginning and Intermediate Bands. The combination of youthful energy and precise execution set the stage for an evening of musical brilliance.

The audience was then transported to the era of Beethoven with a stirring rendition of “Ode To Joy” from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. The young musicians displayed remarkable control and sensitivity, capturing the essence of this timeless masterpiece.

The program continued with a diverse selection of pieces, ranging from the uplifting “Psalm 150” to the nostalgic “Give My Regards to Broadway.”

In order to expand SCS’ musical offerings, they introduced their SCS Chorus, which captivated the audience with their harmonious voices and expressive delivery. A highlight of their numbers was the performance of “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from Walt Disney Pictures’ “The Lion King.” The chorus’s rendition was filled with expressive emotion, evoking the magical moments of the beloved film.

The Advanced Band took center stage with a medley from the musical “Jersey Boys,” showcasing their technical prowess and dynamic range. The energy and enthusiasm of the performance were contagious, leaving the audience wanting more.

The concert concluded with a rousing rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Music of The Night” from “The Phantom of the Opera.” The band’s intricate performance created a truly unforgettable finale.

Throughout the evening, the exceptional musical talent of SCS’ students was on full display. Their dedication and passion for music were evident in every note they played and every word they sang.

The concert served as a testament to the importance of music education in fostering creativity, self-expression, and teamwork. Music has the power to transport us to different worlds, evoke emotions, and connect us with others. Through music education, SCS is nurturing the talents of its students and instilling in them a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

As SCS celebrates its 36th year of Concert Band, the school remains committed to providing its students with the opportunity to explore their musical potential and discover the joy of creating and sharing music. The annual concert is a testament to this commitment, and it is a cherished event that brings the community together to celebrate the power of music. SCS invites the island community to join them on Dec. 7 for their Christmas Band Concert at the SCS Chapel. (SCS)
