The Doc is in at 2 years of running

The Force is still with Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero as his running streak is intact and two years or 730 days strong.

The Northern Marianas College president ended 2023 with a bang on New Year’s Eve last Sunday as he raced Run Saipan’s Run from ‘23 Mile Race which also handed him his second straight year of running everyday.

Deleon Guerrero has logged over 1,000 miles of running in different countries, time zones, in airports, through sickness, and through all the elements.

He said the days when he almost missed were when he traveled. “You’re dealing with not only time zone differences, but you’re also traveling for like 24 hours in some cases, so I just run in the airport. A lot of these international airports are big enough to run in. It’s not like a heavy run—I don’t want to scare airport security. I’ll wear my running shoes and it’ll be just like a jog… that’s the hardest part because at first it was a little embarrassing.”

He said the airports that’s easy to squeeze a mile in are the Narita International Airport in Japan and the Los Angeles International Airport or LAX.

On Saipan, Deleon Guerrero lives up north and said he would do his daily run in the early mornings to either Banzai Cliff, Suicide Cliff, or the Last Command Post. “It’s just a beautiful run but you see a lot more cyclists than runners,” he said.

With his second year in the bag, Deleon Guerrero said running everyday has gotten “a lot easier.”

He said he ran 600 miles in his first year of running everyday and said he’s run a lot more in the second year. “I’m running a lot more, running better, and I’m also healthier… I’m losing some weight, I have more energy, I sleep better, so it’s just overall better for my health.”

Deleon Guerrero said he was inspired by longtime streak runner and Run Saipan president Edward Dela Cruz Jr. and Saipan International School headmaster Dr. Ron Snyder. “I started posting and then I inspired other people who are doing it as well. So, it’s just great to see other people being inspired to live healthy.”

As to how he keeps pushing to run everyday, he said, “I’m always talking to people or working with people when it comes to my job, so my running is my daily way to just reflect, pray, and kind of get ready for the day. I love running in the morning—I almost never run at night. So, it’s a perfect way to start the day.”

His goal is to reach 1,000 days straight of running. He did say he is joining the Saipan Marathon on March 9 so it’ll be a challenge for him as he’s also currently training for that. He won’t hit the comma on the marathon, but he said, “I at least want to hit 1,000… I’ll probably keep going though. It’s a habit like brushing your teeth…”

His advice for those who want to start a streak or are currently on one, “Take care of yourself. I take safety very seriously… watch where you’re running because you don’t want to injure yourself. A lot of people I know who were streaking stopped because they injured themselves… just be safe.”
