Young Author’s Showcase on April 6

GUAM—Guam Community College Education Department, in collaboration with the Literacy Navigators Grant Program, invites the public to the Young Author’s Showcase on Saturday, April 6, 2024, from 9am to 1pm at GCC’s Multipurpose Auditorium.

This year’s theme is “Our Island, Our Responsibility”. The goal of the program is to celebrate the diversity of children’s experiences, identities, languages, and homes. The event is completely free to the public and will showcase the works of young authors from Pedro C. Lujan Elementary School & St. John’s Episcopal School. Also in attendance will be several local authors including Catherine Payne, Rufina Mendiola, and Pedro Blas, who will be sharing their experiences with the writing process.

GCC’s Education Department’s mission is to prepare individuals to be professional educators prepared to empower Guam’s youth to become advocates and leaders toward a more sustainable, just, and peaceful society and world. Working with educators in Guam’s schools, the Education Department promotes literacy through the development of our students’ writing skills through authentic writing opportunities such as Young Authors.

The Literacy Navigators Grant Program works to recover learning loss among local elementary-aged students caused by the pandemic. Throughout the course of the program, the Literacy Navigators have worked as embedded tutors in GDOE schools, hosted numerous seasonal literacy events, and last summer, worked in our local libraries to encourage a lifelong love of reading.

To learn more about the event, send an email to literacynavigatorsgrant@guamcc.edu or contact us at (671) 735-5641 ext. 1121 or 1122. (PR)
