Camp teaches Tinian cadets basics of leadership, JUMS
Thirteen cadets from the Tinian High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps recently boned up on how to lead their fellow cadets during a mini-Leadership Camp held on July 21-23.
The cadets volunteered a part of their summer to learn the basics of leadership, first aid, physical training and how to use the U.S. Army Cadet Commend JROTC Unit Management System computer software commonly called “JUMS.”
JUMS is used by all five CNMI JROTC units to maintain training, awards, promotions and files of all cadets records that are presently active, inactive, not enrolled and graduates from the program. It keeps the status of all school JROTC activities and award points to their program in their unit report. It produces recurring reports, which are required by Cadet Command.
During the training, the students stayed on campus and had early wake-up calls so they could conduct physical training. They had all-day classes and leadership roundtable discussions. On the last day the students simulated the first day of school and did an actual in-processing of cadet records and issuing of uniforms.
“The cadets left with a greater appreciation of their role in the JROTC program and have a good foundation to lead their peers in the upcoming school year,” according to a statement from the school.
The program extended its thanks to Education Commissioner Dr. Rita H. Inos for authorizing the camp; Florine Hofschneider and Thelma Cing, Tinian High School’s principal and vice principal, for allowing the camp to be held on campus; and to SFC Richard Haugh (Saipan Southern High School) and SFC Cel Damian (CNMI-MSU HQ) for providing the instruction.
“Special notes of thanks go out to all the parents who allowed their children to attend, and to Mrs. Ratree Haugh and Ms. Elmira Payabyab for providing female chaperone support,” the statement added.
“As a result of this camp, the cadets of the Tinian High School JROTC ‘Stallion Battalion’ are prepared to face the challenges that this school year will bring,” the statement said.
