A place where sushi reigns supreme
There’s a place on Middle Road, Gualo Rai where people from all walks of life and nationalities gather to enjoy assorted kinds of that Japanese delicacy known as sushi—the Sushi Land.
“Sushi” technically refers to rice, but its meaning has evolved to pertain to the delicacy of bite-size chunks of rice with usually fish or seafood filling inside.
“We concentrate on sushi. That’s why our name is Sushi Land,” said Jun Mariano, one of the restaurant’s sushi chef.
Sushi Land offers its patrons a unique dining experience, where they sit in front of a bar-like table equipped with a “rotary sushi,” a rotating equipment that displays an array of sushi. Instead of a bartender, the sushi chef stands at the center, where he prepares the orders in front of guests.
One of the restaurant’s regular customers, triathlete Yoshi Suzuki, said eating sushi is light and healthy.
“Sushi is good. I eat, I cook, I go home, the next day, I feel like eating sushi,” Suzuki said.
His favorite at the restaurant is the Spicy Tuna, a sushi of raw tuna with mayonnaise, hot pepper and spring onion.
Sushi Land considers Spicy Tuna and Spicy Salmon as their specialties, Mariano said.
“Those are what Chamorros, Americans and Filipinos are looking for here,” Mariano said. “Customers of diverse nationalities like them.”
The restaurant also serves Tempura Roll, a sushi of fried shrimp. The rice cubes are topped with Japanese seaweed known as nori, and fish eggs, known as tobiko. The California Roll, meanwhile, has avocado, cucumber and crab meat filling.
What Japanese clients usually go for at Sushi Land is oni, which consists of fresh Japanese sea urchin topped on rice.
Sushi Land prices are affordable, ranging from $1, $2, and $3, according to Mariano. By just calling the restaurant through the phone, Sushi Land will prepare food orders for customers to pick up. Mariano said the restaurant is also suitable for parties.
Korean businessman Kum Joo Lee owns Sushi Land, which was established in December 1999. The restaurant opens daily from 11:30am to 10pm, and may be reached at 233-0387.
