The much delayed Junior League baseball field project on a prime lot on Capitol Hill—an area adjacent to the Governor’s Office—is now underway following the identification of needed funding, according to Saipan Rep. Justo Quitugua.

Quitugua told reporters yesterday that some $240,000 funding has been identified for the project.

“Many people have asked me what’s up now with that project because all they saw was digging and nothing is there right now. We have an update now: the solicitation for bids begins next week, which will run for about three weeks. Shortly after that, we’d know the contractor, which will then have 120 days to construct and complete the project,” said Quitugua.

He said senior citizens are the ones most affected by the delay as they used to frequent the area for recreation purposes.

The lawmaker said the funding was appropriated through House Bill 14-1, which he authored specifically for the project, and H.B. 14-178. The bill has already been approved by the governor.

Based on the plan, the baseball field project includes the construction of dugouts and bleachers, backstop, booth, chain link fence, and toilet. The funding also covers lighting fixtures and power pole, as well as the construction of a parking facility for 40 cars.

The baseball project was first launched by then congressman Frank Aldan, but it did not see completion for lack of funds and limited time.

Meanwhile, Quitugua said that nearly $2 million had been identified for road projects in Precinct 4.

He said this includes $460,000 for the recently completed road paving in Tanapag, road rail construction in As Matuis, paving of Suto Road in La Fiesta area, and rehabilitation of Kagman 1 bridge.

Nearly $200,000 will be used for MV Reyes road project, and $1 million for road project in As Teo.
