The Chamorro and Carolinian Language Policy Commission under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs announced on Friday that the 2nd Annual Kantan Isla Concert is tentatively set to unfold next month on Tinian.

The concert will be held at the Kammer Beach Pavilion from Sept. 17-19.

According to Commission executive director Candido Taman, the annual concert is intended to provide a venue for local artists within the community to showcase their talent in Chamorro and Carolinian composition of songs, chants, and traditional dances.

“The main objective of this is to amplify understanding and appreciation of our cultural heritage,” he said.

Further, Taman said the event will be documented with the intention of establishing a Marianas music library, and urged the general public to take part in the event.

“We encourage all performers and artists to please participate in this event. Like in the previous year, there will be vendors to accompany the live entertainment,” he said.

Taman cited that last year’s concert, which was held at the Garapan Fishing Base, was a success and drew many positive feedback from the audience.

“Last year, the people were very happy and voiced their sentiments that the commission would continue this and make it an annual program, and that’s what we’re doing,” he said.

Last year’s three-day event featured various musicians, cultural dance groups, and thousands of spectators. It also served as an opportunity to expose up-and-coming young artists to the public. Shortly after the concert, several artists went on to record albums for commercial sale.

Taman said that when created, it was agreed that the concert would be a traveling event within the CNMI, resulting in the push for Tinian to host this year’s gig.

Meanwhile, Taman, a popular local artist known by many, indicated that he might also perform several numbers during the concert.

“I might if I have to, however, now I am in a position to provide for the younger ones,” he said.
