Nearly $5 million in rebate checks were mailed out on Tuesday, representing the last batch of rebate and refund payments for tax year 2002.

Department of Finance Secretary Fermin Atalig confirmed the issuance of the checks, saying those who have yet to receive their rebates should now check their mails.

“This is the last batch, except for those whose tax filings had problems. The ones with problems are still being processed,” he said.

Problems could include incorrect Social Security numbers or other unreconciled data.

A large portion of Tuesday’s release represents rebate payments covering tax year 2002 but some are also rebates from tax years 1999 to 2001.

Atalig declined to say the total number of checks that were issued Tuesday but said the figure amounted to about $4.9 million.

Public information officer Pete Callaghan said those who have yet to receive their rebate checks should check with the department or the Treasury Division to find out if their checks have already been processed or if there are any problems holding up the release of the check.

With this last issuance, the Finance Department will now begin processing refund and rebate payments for tax year 2003.

Atalig earlier said the CNMI Treasury could start releasing 2003 rebates by the end of August.
