The Basketball Association of the Northern Marianas Islands 25-and-under Basketball League will have a meeting this Thursday, August 19, at 5:30pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.

League coordinator Abner Venus said the agenda for the meeting includes league format, cost of entrance fee, and submission of team rosters.

Venus said last month that seven to eight teams have already expressed interest in signing up for the 2004 season.

According to Venus, players eligible to see action in the league are those whose 26th birthday does not predate the opening of the season. Team rosters should be submitted as soon as possible and should include the participants’ proof of age.

Teams may be required to pay an entrance of $900, however, Venus said that amount has yet to be confirmed. He, however, added that the $900 fee would include uniforms for all teams.

The 25-and-under league was initiated years back after BANMI saw that the younger 22-and-under league does not attract that much interest.

BANMI officials note that for such a small place as Saipan, raising the age limit by three years would be the ideal since the 22-and-under format would basically lure players from the 18-and-under Rotary league.

For more information on the upcoming 25-and-under Basketball League, please call Venus at 287-5911, BANMI president Mike Muna, or Elias Rangamar at 664-2503.

Last year, Verizon Proa hoisted the championship of the 25-and-under tournament after it turned back the charge of Ghasias Brothers, 106-91.

Verizon, coached mastermind Rufino Aguon, also won last year’s season’s pennant championship crown behind cagers Jester Garcia, Dave Palacios, Boaz Etpison, Ambrose Ogumoro, Jeremy Sablan, Ponce Rasa, J.C. Kim, Oscar Ada, and Mel Manibusan. (Shan Seman)
