The office of Public Health Secretary James U. Hofschneider said yesterday that the expansion of the Commonwealth Health Center’s parking lot has begun.

Project contractor AIC Marianas Inc. has begun work on the western (lower) side facing Chalan Pale Arnold and will be followed by work on the southern and eastern side (near the emergency entrance) of the CHC Complex.

The current parking lot has a capacity of 232 vehicles (with seven handicap parking). This project will increase the number of parking spaces by 62 percent (378, including 16 handicap parking spaces) and is expected to last no more than eight months. The length of the project is due to the contractor’s scheduling so as not to inconvenience CHC patrons and staff.

“CHC and the contractor will continue to keep the public informed on a regular basis as to the parking areas affected,” the statement said. “We ask the public for their patience and cooperation during this time and we have asked employees to consider carpooling.”
