SFA postpones fishing tournament
The Saipan Fishermen’s Association announced that 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament, originally scheduled to kick off tomorrow, has been rescheduled due to the weather related issues attributed to the untimely visit of Supertyphoon Chaba.
All of the regularly planned activities will remain unchanged. However, the tournament will now begin on Saturday, Sept. 11, in the deep waters off the coast of Saipan, and continue through Sunday, Sept. 12.
“Due to the current sea conditions, the teams from Guam would not be able to make the trip and compete in the tournament. In addition, many of the locals planning to participate in this year’s anniversary event need the extra time to repair damages to their boats sustained during the typhoon,” said chairman of the Solicitation Committee Wolf Mojica.
The Department of Public Safety Boating Safety Section will be performing courtesy safety inspections in the two weeks prior to the tournament for all whom wish to join the annual event.
The Officers of Boating Safety have been the offering inspections in every year that there has been a tournament, and this year they will be inspecting on-site during the tournament as well. If you wait until the last minute, officers will be at Sugar Dock, Fishing Base, and at Smiling Cove on Saturday and Sunday, but boaters beware, if your registration is expired on the day of the event, there will be no way renew in time to participate.
To schedule a safety inspection, contact the DPS Boating Safety Section by calling 664-9180/1/2/3/4
Applications for the tournament are available at the Marianas Visitors Authority and the Fishing Tackle Shop. Registration for the event will now be held on Friday, Sept. 10, from 5pm to 7pm at the Smiling Cove Marina in Garapan.
