The U.S. Navy on Guam continues to work on resolving water production issues despite continued high turbidity at the Fena Reservoir and heavy rainfall associated with the approaching Tropical Storm Songda.

“Personnel are working non-stop at the Navy Water Treatment Plant and are gradually increasing water production,” said Lt. Arwen Consaul, public affairs officer for U.S. Naval Forces Marianas. “Although inclement weather may pose more challenges for the plant, we have no plans to curtail our efforts.”

The Navy’s water conservation schedule will continue until further notice. Water to Naval Base Guam, Nimitz Hill, and Old and New Apra Housing will be shut off at 8pm and turned back on at 6am the following day. Residents can expect reduced water flow.

Due to a potential for contamination of standing water in the water distribution system while water is shut off, the boil-water notice also remains in effect until further notice for areas affected by the water conservation schedule. If tap water is transparent, it should be boiled vigorously for two to three minutes. If tap water is brown or cloudy, a half-teaspoon of unscented bleach should be added to every five gallons of water, which should sit for 30 minutes.

The Navy is keeping its personnel and Guam Waterworks Authority apprised of changes in the status of water production and the scheduled conservation timetable. GWA customers with questions regarding water are asked to contact GWA at 646-4211 or 647-7836.
