The CNMI government is opening up today the Saipan Typhoon Relief Center, which would provide relief items such as tents, tarps, cots, and blankets to those affected by supertyphoon Chaba.

As of yesterday, some 746 evacuees remained at government shelters, the CNMI Emergency Operations Center said.

The EOC said the relief center would entertain applications from 8am to 8pm at the Joeten Kiyu Public Library and will be open Mondays through Saturdays. The EOC advised applicants to bring with them official identification cards.

“First priority will be given to applicants living in shelters or those with destroyed homes,” the EOC said. “Eligible applicants will be directed to a distribution center at a different location to receive relief goods.”

EOC public information officer Jenn Castro said a total of 746 evacuees remained at government shelters on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota as of 1:30pm yesterday.

On Saipan, Marianas High School had about 304 evacuees; Ada gymnasium, 191; Kagman Community Center, 144; and Tanapag Social Hall, 25. Sixty-eight evacuees were staying at the Tinian gym, while Rota Aging Center had 14.

Chaba victims who need relief assistance or information may call the EOC’s helpline at 322-8621, 322-8626 or 322-9982/3.
