Government employees will spend Labor Day tomorrow without the usual festivities, after preparations for the celebration were held off by the outcome of Supertyphoon Chaba.

Press secretary Peter Callaghan said Labor Day celebration has been postponed, as all the people doing the planning got involved with the cleanup and recovery efforts following the typhoon. “They were too busy with the aftermath of Chaba to plan the party, so the party has to be postponed,” he said.

The Labor Day committee is now looking at two options, according to Callaghan. These are to cancel the celebration for this year, or to schedule it for a later date.

But a decision may not be made for another two weeks or so, as recovery and relief distribution efforts are still ongoing.

Labor Day is celebrated annually with a recognition ceremony for outstanding employees—from the department level to the Commonwealth level. Also held every year are sports tournaments, contests, a picnic, and various other activities.

Last year, the Overall Employee of the Year award was given to Carlyn Hofschneider of the Department of Public Safety. About 25 other government employees received the Department Employee of the Year Award.

Special awards were also given to departments who won in three sports competitions.

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs took the softball championship, while the Northern Islands Mayor’s Office won in the volleyball competition. The Northern Marianas College won first place in the basketball match.

A professional firefighters challenge was also held, with the Commonwealth Ports Authority beating DPS.
