Dance academy to stage ‘Nutcracker’
Glushko’s Academy of Performing Arts recently finished its 2004 summer session, ending what it described as a “successful 2003-2004 season.”
The academy said in a statement that it was a busy year for GAPA, with its more than 50 students.
Some of the highlights from last season include the students dancing with Russian ballet masters in a community performance of “Sleeping Beauty” last December. Later in the season, GAPA’s dance teacher, Anna Glushko, participated in the Miss Teen and Little Miss CNMI beauty pageant as a choreographer with her own students as guest performers.
In May, GAPA successfully conducted its Annual Concert and Fundraising event, with a number of public performances at the Thursday Night Garapan Street Market, Flame Tree Festival, and the Taste of Marianas. On June 4, GAPA’s students even took part in a parade.
During the summer session, the creative activity of GAPA continued with preparations for a new performance of “The Nutcracker” that will be held in December this year. Glushko herself provided the dance classes at Echo Summer Camp and Hyatt Summer Camp. Eager ballet students tried to learn and perform certain excerpts from “The Nutcracker” ballet.
All GAPA’s students will have a unique opportunity to dance with professional Russian ballet stars. This year, Glushko is willing to invite ballet masters from such Russian cities as Moscow and Saratov.
With the closure of the season, GAPA is announcing the start of enrollment for the 2004-2005 school year. There are ballet classes for dancers of all ages, from young ballet dancers to modern teenage dancers to even adult beginners. The classes for young ballerinas include a combination of warm-up, ballet, dance, and some basic gymnastics with a senior ballet class following this program at the ballet school.
All who are willing to participate in the performance of “The Nutcracker” are invited to join a class at GAPA’s studio located in the Nauru Bldg, 4th floor. For any information call Anna Glushko at 483-6271.
